Season 2014 - The 34th Season

Twilighters  Report   Season  2014   by Tony Gibson

The Twilighters have been a popular part of our club for 34 years.  The formula of moderately competitive social tennis, after match conviviality and general bonhomie continues to be a winner.  Wednesday nights sees most courts occupied with the prime of Park Orchards menfolk enjoying social tennis throughout Winter and a slightly more formal summer season.

The 34th season attracted 75 entrants to the 12 week summer season including 8 new members with the average gradually reducing over the years.

12 teams fought out the summer season with Adam Bosna’s (Li’s Na Na’s) taking out the favourites Mark Hamilton’s (Hewitts’s Hogs).  The winning team was Adam Bosna  (C) Tim Harrison, Rod Muirhead, Simon Purbrick and Tony Kinivan

The traditional sumptuous Grand Final Dinner kept everyone happy thanks to Mark Dimech and his Master chefs.  The award presentations recognised the season highlights and culminated in Alan Williamson presenting the famous Golden Racket to the Mark Dimech for 2014.

The end of season trip from May 30-June 1 was well supported with around 30 guys enjoying golf at Eagle Ridge in Rosebud followed by a relaxed weekend in Blairgowrie.  The more flexible and local venue suited those who couldn’t commit to a 4 day break.  Domestic bliss was maintained in the process.

We hosted the Park Orchards Sharks football team for an interclub social get together but the pouring rain prevented a round robin tennis tournament.  Table tennis was substituted and the competition was just as fierce.  Mixed pairs of Sharks and Twilighters played off with Jeff McMahon and John Brown taking out the final and being awarded the Park Orchards Cup.  A great night and opportunity to meet the impressive young men who play for our own local footy club.  We will repeat the night next year, a bit earlier in the year to avoid training clashes (for the footy players not the Twilighters!).
We held a number of social dinners in July and December with the usual excellent menu and enthusiastic frivolity. Another fundraising night in April was also a great success.

A big thanks to the Bob Hadley, Trevor Street, Peter White, Bob Britton and John Gayfer for their hospitality expertise and to Frank Magnano for providing the weekly raffle prize.  Bob continues his sterling work as the POTC clubhouse manager with the able assistance of Peter White and Bob Britton.

Twilighters will continue to enjoy the club throughout winter with casual social tennis on a Wednesday night.
